History of the Parish Council
Parish Councils as we know them were created under The Local Government Act of 1894. As it was not compulsory for small parishes to elect a Parish Council, the parish of Bramdean chose to be run by a Parish Meeting. Hinton Ampner elected a Parish Council and was independent of its neighbour until April 1932 when the decreasing rural population led to the amalgamation of many small parishes in Hampshire.
The two parishes were known as Bramdean Parish Council incorporating Hinton Ampner for the next 70 years. Not surprisingly, the arrangement was never entirely popular with Hinton Ampner residents and the anomaly was finally corrected in July 2002 with the adoption of the present name, Bramdean and Hinton Ampner Parish Council. The minute books for the two former parochial parishes which were in existence before 1894 when they were joined into a civil parish are held at the Hampshire Record Office and make interesting reading.
There are seven Parish Councillors. The Parish Council and the Recreation Committee each meet four times per annum, normally at 7.30 pm on a Monday evening in the Village Hall. All the meetings are open to the public. The Annual Parish Meeting is normally held at 8 pm on the last Monday in April at the same venue.
